Another protester killed in police firing in Sunsari; Madhes unrest enters day 15

One person was killed and six others were injured when police opened fired at a group of protesters for violating the curfew orders in Duhabi of Sunsari district, Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Biskut Miya of Duhabi, according to police. Six others were also injured in the police firing during the curfew imposed since 8 am in the area by the local administration. Of them, Musuwa Miya and Bodh Narayan Paswan are said to be in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, although it has been more than two weeks that life in terai has been crippled due to daily demonstrations and curfew, all efforts of the government to bring the situation there under control has failed.

People in terai are reeling under immense shortage of daily essential items coupled with the restriction in their movement due to curfew orders.

Taking into account the possibility of clashes, local administrations have imposed curfews in more places in terai and have extended it in places where it was already on.

However, people in Lahan, Saptari and the highway area of Sunsari heaved some sigh of relief after curfew orders were lifted there in the morning. However, the curfew wasn't lifted in Parsa, Nawalparsi including few other districts even though it was relaxed for few hours Wednesday morning to let people buy essential goods.

Things started to return to normalcy in Banke and Bardiya with market places opening for business and little vehicular traffic. The people in Bardiya had been defying the shutdown strike imposed there from the past few days.

Sick and tired of the long-drawn strikes and the curfews imposed in the aftermath of violent demonstrations, people are starting to defy it to return to their normal lives.
